UBU ROI. OUVERTURE (2011)

Ubu the King is a play by Alfred Jarry, premiered in 1896. It is a precursor of the Theatre of the Absurd and Surrealism, and the first of three stylised burlesques in which Jarry satirises power, greed, and their evil practices – in particular the propensity of the complacent bourgeois to abuse the authority engendered by success.

The emperor’s new clothes. A cunning rogue says that he can make clothes that stupid people cannot see, but in reality he makes nothing. Based on the tale of the duke of Lucanor and the Andersen’ version, it is interpreted with objects, shadows and cinematographic projections.

Les Ballets C. de la B, Koen Augustijnen: six dancers/acrobats join altus Steve Dugardin and four ‘live’ musicians of the Kirke string quartet on stage. Research on a morphology which comes to existence through the combination of different dance styles, performances, theatre, music and visual art.

POÈROS. CARDINAL RED (2005)

Poèros is a DVD-project with 24 erotic poems, written by Lut de Block and Johan De Boose. Each poem inspired the video-artists and composer – as they inspired the poets as well – and was named after a different shade of red.

Jazz to Pinter. Six actors interpret ‘The Dumb Waiter’ by Harold Pinter in the form of a spectacular Word Opera by François Van Eeckhaute, declaiming the script a capella against a background of soundscapes.

VOORTEKEN – SOUNDSCAPE (2002)

A multidisciplinary project in seven dimensions on the theme of symbols. Symbols in photography, video, visual and graphic art are placed in an all-embracing acoustical perspective based on the responsories of Carlo Gesualdo. No beginning. No end.

TOSCANIA. FINALE (2001)

For this multidisciplinary project, 12 compositions were written, one for each month of the year 2000. Field recordings made in Tuscany were the starting material for the design and realisation of the soundscapes. Toscania is a film, a book of photographs with a CD, an exhibition and a live concert, designed by Injas Devoldere.

CHOIRS IN FLANDERS – RADIO TUNE (1998)

A number of well-known themes from choral literature were used for this signature tune. The commission was to write an arrangement with characteristic elements, so that the listener recognises the radio programme immediately.

DIE LEIDEN DES JUNGEN WERTHERS. WALTZ (1995)

In 1774, in just a few weeks’ time, Goethe wrote the novel that would make him famous. The first edition , which was published anonymously, was criticised for being an immoral book and an incitement to suicide. The most recent ban on its publication dates back to 1939, when Franco had all the works of this ‘degenerate writer’ removed from Spanish public libraries.

VOLPONE. MAIN THEME – MINIATURE RAGTIME VERSION (1992)

The rich Venetian Volpone spreads the rumour that he is to die soon. The forthcoming inheritance attracts a host of greedy citizens. One offers his wife, the other wants to disown his son in favour of Volpone… This satire by Ben Jonson focuses on human weaknesses such as avarice and envy, but betrays the belief that people can be improved.

MELANCKOLY. INTROVERTURE 1 (1992)

A woman is full of sorrow. She tears up the books that men have written about her. She puts up a continual fight against prejudices, against the lightness of what was. Mistress Melanckoly: a monologue on spleen, the English malady, Weltschmerz and le mal du siècle.

New York, East Village. Sam Hendrix is a photographer. His wife, Suzy, is blind. Three criminals come looking for a doll, stuffed with heroine, that they have hidden in their flat. One evening Suzy is alone at home, and she uses the only weapon that is left to her: the dark…

JULES. PROLOGUE – JULES THEME (1989)

This play is based on the story ‘Maître Zacharias’ by the young Jules Verne. A watchmaker who has devoted himself to the quest for perfect time, puts his soul to every clock he makes. In return, he will have to give his daughter in marriage to the devil, who is called Pittonaccio on this occasion. A different Faust myth, or the struggle between personal ambition and duty.
